Last year, Germany recorded an increase in the number of asylum applications, the highest numbers since 2017. The largest numbers of people were fleeing from Syria and Afghanistan. It was estimated that 17.5% of the initial applications were submitted on behalf of children under the age of one who were born in Germany but who do not automatically obtain citizenship through birth on the territory.

This means that many children of asylum-seeking and refugee families may be at risk of becoming or remaining stateless, especially if their parents cannot pass on their nationality.
